To scale heights of Success and fame at a very young age is an achievement in itself and, the success story of International Master, Deepan, is one that can be heard and read with pleasure. Deepan is a new national sensation. He hs won the Asian Junior Chess Championship, is already an International Master, haone GM Norm to his credit and is the foremost Chess Player in the Junior Circuit in Asia. Hailing from Tamil Nadu, the state that produced the country's first International Master and Grand Masters, Deepan is all of 16 years of age; is still at school; has won accoldes and honors much more than many young boys and girls of his age can dream of. Recently in Chennai to participate in the coaching programme with Grand Master Maxim Sorokin organised by the popular Emmanuel Chess Centre, he returned home as an enriched and inspired winner who aspires to scale the pinnacle of success in Chess.

Calm, mature and good at heart, this young man dreams of conquering the world. However, his immediate aim is to become a Grand Master and then ultimately wear the crown of his idol Gary Kasparov as the world champion as long as he can. So far he hs been the Asian Bronze medalist thrice in the Under -10, Under - 12, Under - 14 categories; won the National Sub-Junior Championship in 2000; stood second in the Under -18 category in the recent Commonwealth Championships in Mumbai, only next to GM Harikrishna; is currently an International Master and won the Asian Junior Championship in 2002, which was held in Srilanka. With a smile of satisfaction on his face, he says that being Numero Uno in Asian Junior circuit has been his happiest and proudest achievement so far. Winning over champions and Grandmasters is no hard task for Deepan, that, so far, he has defeated three Grandmasters and has played against the young chess sensation Koneru Humpy thrice, winning twice.
Deepan started off with chess early in life when his family recognizing the talent in him initiated him into the game as a very small boy. He was al of 6.5 years when he stood III in a District level tournament in Madurai. His subsequent performances made him grow into a national plyer and become an International Master. International Master Ravi Sekar regularly coaches him and his mother manages his career.
Recognition for his talent and skill has not been lacking. Corporate Giant WIPRO sensed the talent in him and sponsors him now, taking care of al his professional needs whith monetary support. Encouragement has also come in the way of this achiever from his school, the Tamil Nadu Chess Association, the All India Chess Federation and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, the Emmanuel Chess Academy.
Wearing the crown of Championship lightly on his young head, Deepan is very clear about taking chess his full time career and a degree in college is all that this intelligent student seeks academically. Despite having a whirlpool career around the year with tournaments and coaching camps, Deepan has managed to score a decent 70% in the recent board exams in his X standard. Listening to popular Tamil and English songs and hanging out with his innumerable friends is his favourite pastime, when he is not spending the regular 6 hrs a day routine in chess practice. Having lost his father and being the eldest child in the family, he shoulders the responsibility of making the family proud with his achievements
With his professional Chess career graph always moving up, Deepan thirsts for more and is a definite world champion in the making who will make Tamil Nadu and India proud. Ebenezer Joseph of Emmanuel Chess Centre who guides and mentors him sees a definite Champion in him and says, that " ". With dreams in his eyes and with a determination to be world champion, Deepan is an inspiration to all young people who dream of success.
